life's roadblocks

sorry that i haven't posted anything new in over a week... wow. i can't believe it's already been that long.

we've had to slow the pace of the project for a bit. hopefully after this week we can pick it back up again!

we DID have an interview (but no photo shoot-- yet) last weekend with Muthoni, and what a joy that was! I think we could have sat there and visited all afternoon! (If we hadn't already made dinner plans with heather's family for that evening; we probably WOULD have :)

anyway, life is kinda funny sometimes... maybe it throws obsticles our way every now and then to remind us that we're only human. i don't know, but hopefully this will only be a temporary slow-down, and we can get back on track within the next few weeks.

hope all is well, and we'll have some updates for you soon!

Project Participation - fyi

We wanted to go ahead and post this information on the blog since we've been receiving a number of new inquiries about project participation...

Step One: The online interview
We created a preliminary interview questionare as a way to get to know the women a little bit before actually meeting in person. Once your participation is confirmed, you'll be emailed a link to the survey. After you have that completed; Heather and I will email you copy of our answers to the online interview questions. We think it helps to have a basic level of familiarity with each other before we do finally meet in person!

Step Two: In-person interview and photo shoot

Once you've completed the online interview, we'll work on meeting face-to-face. Unfortunately, we are somewhat limited on the available poject hours we have each week. We try schedule 2-3 shoots in Dallas every other week and make one out of town trip (currently, either Austin or Houston) per month (usually a weekend or extended weekend).

Step Three: Follow-up

We might follow-up with some of you (as we can) throughout the duration of the project (12-16 months) for additional photos, interview time, etc.

Release Form
If you are chosen to participate in the photo essay, we'll ask you to sign a basic release form giving us permission to use the content of your interview and the photos from your photo shoot for the project and for promotion associated with the project.

Compensation
In return for your time and input, we will be presenting each participant an original print of their choice from their photo shoot. As a participant you will also have the option of purchasing additional *discounted* prints-- but that is entirely optional and not required at all to participate.

Each participant will also be invited as a special guest to attend any (or all) of the gallery and/or book openings that occur once the project has been completed.

If you're interested in being considered, please contact us directly via email (see links on the right).

Hope this answers some questions! Please let me know if I can clarify anything else.

The Women: Patty

Patty (and her group of friends, "The Hags") were our first non-Dallas area interview. Heather and I left Dallas Friday afternoon around 1:30 (quite a bit later than we'd hoped) and got into Austin JUST in time hit rush hour (hooray! friday traffic!)... it was a delightful experience.

PLUS, we had decided that it would just be better to make this a weekend trip for the WHOLE family-- so, we brought the dogs! Yayyy family vacation! (err-- yeah, think: National Lampoon's).

It was a stressful afternoon for sure-- we had the dogs groomed in Dallas before leaving (of course they were late finishing), packed the car, stopped for lunch, stopped for gas, stopped in Waco to pee (us and the dogs), battled our way into Austin, STILL had to stop by the hotel to check in, unload and get the pups situated before we could leave to meet Patty and the Hags for our session-- whew.

Needless to say, our first out of town session was off to a rocky start (understatement? yes.)

We called Patty as soon as we had an idea of how late we were going to be, and found out that she and the hags were already at the location (the coolest bar EVER! Karma on 8th-- see their link under the "friends/supporter" section on the right) having a cocktail...

As it turns out-- Patty had arranged for the bar to open up early for our shoot. We met Suzette (one of the owners) shortly after arriving-- She was incredibly friendly and accommodating! Karma isn't a gay bar-- but they are obviously very gay-friendly and supportive of the local Austin community. She has offered to host our Austin opening sometime next year! And we couldn't have been more thrilled by her support!)

After meeting all of the Hags and getting our lighting set up for the shoot-- we spent a few minutes talking with Patty alone. It didn't take long for us to realize what a fantastic group of women this was and after talking more in depth with Patty, we found ourselves so envious of the nature of their friendships... They definitely have a rare and wonderful thing in this goup. Something I think we all long for-- and as women (young lesbian women, especially) can often be hard to find-- and even harder to keep: A solid foundation of kindred spirits... A chosen family of friends.

It was Patty who initially contacted me about contributing the project. She thought their particiation could be a way to honor the special and intimate friendships that these women have cultivated over so many years. She hoped that by sharing their stories, it would give hope to others.

It already has.

Heather and I were touched by their connections, love and concern for each other, and when we asked about their "secret to success" the answer was so simple: trust.

In a society where ex-es overlap and date each other, infidelity is mainstream and women, in general somehow can't be supportive of each other in spite of common interests, dreams and goals -- it was so refreshing to find that it IS possible to find (and keep) that kind of support system... drama-free women, couples and friends-- a family who offers an unconditional love, support and guidance.

You'll be hearing more about the Hags-- and the group will soon have a bio of their own. It will hopefully be posted within the next couple of weeks.

More Photos Soon!

I finished a few more "mini bios", and I hope to post them tonight. We're going to try to keep the site updated as much as possible, but sometimes I get buried in the digital post-processing --er... process, and it takes me awhile to get caught up (especially if we have more than 2-3 photo shoots a week!)

I'm looking into upgrading my computer at home... my old Powerbook G4 is great for working on my design jobs, but I really do need more "umph" (i.e. speed) when it comes to working my 'mad Photoshop skillz' on all of these high-res RAW files :) Once I can sort out a new(er) machine, I'm hoping my workflow efficiency will be MUCH improved!

Anyhoo... that's all (for now!)

The Women: Cookie

We're going to try to share a little bit of information about each individual/couple/group as we move forward (maybe 1-2 a week). This will give everyone a sneak peek into the project itself as well as a brief introduction to each of the women participating.

Cookie was our first interview, and we couldn't have been more excited (and nervous!). Honestly, I really don't know who's more apprehensive and excited before each meeting: Heather and I or you guys! Wow-- but especially for this first appointment-- we really had no idea what to expect... We could have easily shown up and left disappointed and heartbroken after the first 20 minutes if things didn't happen the way we had dreamed they would.

We met Cookie on a Saturday afternoon during her lunch break from work. And man, does this girl works a LOT! Her career is a big part of her life and of who she is... she's, by far, one of the most intelligent, driven, compassionate, focused (and friendly!) people I've ever met in my life.

Needless to say, we left (3 or so hours later) full of enthusiasm and excitement! Our time with Cookie breathed new life into the project, and proved to us that this WAS indeed going to be all that we knew that it could be!

After a long month+ of planning (and hoping that we could really make this happen)... it WAS actually happening and we were so friggin pumped!

With each new person who, within SUCH a short amount of time, opens up and shares their lives with us-- proves that this really is a worthy and important thing. And with that, our enthusiasm and excitement grows more and more.

Moving along!

When we first decided to start this blog, we had hopes of daily (or weekly, at the very least!) updates. So, I apologize in advance if, in actuality, it happens bi-weekly (or even just rather sporadically) instead.

We really had no way of anticipating the time/energy the project would require from us. Initially, it was going to be something fun that we could work on in-between paying photography gigs... a pet project that would mean something to us and that we could really "get into" since it would combine two of the things we both enjoy-- the art of photography and the art of humanity, itself.

Heather and I love people... Even before this whole process began, we really enjoyed talking to and meeting new people-- hearing stories and finding little tidbits of ourselves in each new person we met-- all while learning about, understanding and appreciating our differences.

We didn't really know what this project would "be"... exactly. Or how we would even go about starting it or finishing it. But we knew we could do it, and we knew it would be fun!

So, we began.

And almost the very instant that it was conceived it began to grow and has been showing us where to take it ever since. It's been over 2 months since we set the wheels in motion. So far we've researched and planned the overall direction of the project, brainstormed interview questions, created an online interview questionaire, developed contact lists, completed 6 photo shoots, met 12 fascinating women in person and we have 30+ more who are awaiting their in-person interviews and photo shoots, AND we have people calling and emailing us (daily!) asking if they can pass along the information to their friends in other cities/states... Little did we know that the project would take on such life of its own.

At some point we realized that it was no longer just "something we could do for fun"... it was going to be so much bigger and more important that that.

We really wish we had more time available each week for interviews, photoshoots, promotional planning, but fortunately for us (and for our landlord, utility companies and other creditors) those paying photography gigs are still rolling in and the day job still expect us to show up! However, unfortunately for the project, we are left to squeeze in sessions, out of town trips and additional research, planning, etc. as we have the time and resources available.

Now, we'll use this blog to inform AND tease :) First of all-- as a way of keeping you (and the WORLD) updated on our progress, and soon-- we'll start sharing a few bits and pieces of the women who ARE the very essence of this project!

At any rate, we truly hope you enjoy meeting and getting to know these women (many of whom we now call friends) as much as we have!!

Please be patient with us and the project-- it is moving forward and growing; slowly but surely...
